CHS has begun a multi-year participatory planning, programming and design process with the architectural firm of Perkins Eastman from Charlotte, North Carolina, and UNC’S Facilities Services to examine options for the provision of health and wellness services on campus.
The current CHS building was first requested in 1967, approved in 1974, and completed in 1980 providing 36,000 square feet of usable space housing the general and specialty clinics, a mental health clinic, health education unit, a clinical laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physical therapy, medical records an acute care area, 37-bed inpatient unit and administrative offices.
Not long after the building opened clinics became overcrowded and a need for expansion has never let up. Just about every area within the current building has seen renovations for retrofitting closets into offices and storage space being converted and used for the expansion of the pharmacy and physical therapy.
Nine years ago the SHS Student Psychological Services and the University Counseling Center merged into Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). At that time the in-patient unit was closed so that SHS could focus on ambulatory care activities and the space was converted into offices for CAPS. This unit merged with Health Education and is now known as Counseling and Wellness.
Campus Health Services has three major areas: General Medicine Clinics including Women’s Health and Acute Care; Counseling and Wellness; and Sports Medicine.
The next few years will be an exciting time for CHS as we explore building options including renovations, additions or the possibility of a new building. Through it all, we will continue to provide quality, cost-effective care to you, our students.
We have made field trips to the University of Central Florida, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University and Penn State University. We plan to post a few photos of these health centers.
