CAPS Response to Violence against Asian-Americans
Counseling and Psychological Services is deeply saddened by the most recent attacks on the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and the continued expressions of anti-Asian bias in this country.
Please join us in remembering and honoring the victims of Tuesday night's shooting in the Atlanta area, along with their families and communities.
In love and solidarity we say their names:
Daoyou Feng, 44;
Paul Andre Michels, 54;
Xiaojie Tan;
Delaina Ashley Yaun, 33;
Hyun J. Grant, 51;
Suncha Kim, 69;
Soon C. Park, 74;
Yong A. Yue, 63
and the sole survivor Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz, 30
It is clear to those who feel unwelcome and targeted in this country that this is yet another incident of hate and the acts of violence rooted in racism, xenophobia, misogyny, gender discrimination and white supremacist structure that continues to reveal the decay in the moral fabric of our society.
We are here to support and uplift students in the Asian and Asian American communities, especially those who feel traumatized by this violence and/or feel afraid to talk to someone. Please reach out to CAPS at 919-966-3658. In addition, CAPS is available to provide outreach to student groups about mental health and healing from trauma. Staff and faculty affected by this ongoing violence can contact Allen O’Barr directly for support and active engagement in making our community safe and welcoming for everyone.
We can say “no” to this continued violence. It does not have to be inevitable.
