Handling Uncertainty

It’s ok to not have it all figured out

During times like these, it’s normal to feel uncertain. Maybe you’re wondering how the end of the year will go. Maybe you’re thinking about internships, jobs, or what comes next after Carolina. Uncertainty can feel heavy, but it means that you care about what’s ahead.

Pause and Breathe

When your mind starts racing through what ifs, take a moment to come back to the present.
Try this:

  • Take a few slow, deep breaths
  • Remind yourself: Right now, I’m doing the best I can with what I have.
  • Focus on one thing you can control today. You could finish that study guide or email that advisor – just do something.

Small steps keep you grounded when the future feels big.

Reframe the Unknown

Every Tar Heel has had moments of feeling insecure about what’s next. Remember, some of the best opportunities arise after plans change.
Ask yourself:

  • What can I learn from this moment?
  • Who can I reach out to for guidance?
  • What values matter most to me as I make decisions?

Be curious about yourself and what you need. And stay compassionate with yourself and the people around you – we’re all still figuring this out.

When It Feels Overwhelming

Stress around exams or the future can take a real toll—mentally and physically. If you’re losing sleep, feeling anxious, or just need to talk things through, reaching out for support can help you get back to balance.

UNC offers many ways to get support – CAPSWellness Coaching and more.  Reach out when you need it. Explore supportive resources on the Heels Care Network resource hub.

Stress, uncertainty, and academic pressure can build up fast and you don’t have to manage it alone. CAPS offers same-day appointments, brief therapy, group counseling, and referral support to help you navigate whatever you’re facing. Whether you’re feeling anxious about exams, overwhelmed by decisions about the future, or just not yourself lately, CAPS is a safe place to talk it through. Reaching out isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a step toward feeling more grounded and supported.

CAPS is here to meet you where you are and help you find a path forward.

Bottom Line

No one has all the answers. Do the next right thing for you and keep moving forward. Uncertainty doesn’t mean you’re off track; it means you’re still growing.

And here at Carolina, you should never have to do it alone.

You’ve got this, Tar Heels
