The start of a new semester offers a valuable opportunity. It’s a natural reset point where new patterns are easier to establish. Building small, consistent habits around your mental and emotional wellbeing can help you manage stress, stay grounded, and thrive throughout the fall.
Here’s how to make those habits stick:
Do It Every Day
Consistency matters more than intensity. A few minutes of journaling, deep breathing, or mindfulness practice done daily will serve you better than longer sessions done rarely. Use schedule transitions now to carve out that time.
Be Flexible
Give yourself grace. Missing a day doesn’t mean starting over — it just means continuing. Self-compassion is itself a mental health practice.
Make It Easy
Reduce the effort between you and your wellbeing habits. Keep a journal on your nightstand. Set a phone reminder for a brief breathing exercise. The fewer steps involved, the easier it is to follow through, especially on hard days.
Make It Fun
Connect your new habits to things that bring you joy or connection. Meditate with a friend. Join a campus group that aligns with a wellness goal. Listen to an audiobook only during your wind-down routine. Enjoyment makes habits sustainable.
Stack Your Habits
Build new habits onto existing ones. Try a short mindfulness exercise right after you wake up, or a few minutes of reflection before bed. Attaching new behaviors to established routines helps them take hold.
Taking care of your mental health is an ongoing practice, not a single decision. If you’d like extra support, CAPS is here. For more strategies, visit the Learning Center’s website.
